September 9: NYC - Cultural Competency

Legal clients from diverse cultures often have expectations that are directly tied to their backgrounds and cultural norms. These expectations may clash with our own backgrounds, the legal system, and our methods of handling legal issues.  As a result, clients may become frustrated and distrustful of the legal system, hindering the successful resolution of the legal issues. Overcoming these cultural barriers is key to effective communication and legal advocacy.
This training will focus on developing cross-cultural lawyering skills which will help attorneys effectively communicate and interact with clients from different cultures and backgrounds.  We will discuss approaches and best practices for working effectively with diverse clients.  At the end of the training, participants will have an increased understanding of how cultural differences may impact the attorney/client relationship and communication. Participants will learn how to overcome the challenges presented by culturally diverse clients to achieve optimal lawyering and representation.
InMotion offers free, CLE-accredited, live trainings throughout the year in matrimonial, family and immigration law. Training sessions include a special focus on the impact of domestic violence on the lives of survivors and the challenges faced by immigrants.
Upon completing a training seminar, major law firm attorneys commit to taking a pro bono matter, either individually or as part of a team of two or more attorneys. Detailed practice manuals and sample documents are provided.
An inMotion attorney will be assigned to mentor you on your matter. Our experienced staff attorneys are available to consult with you, to answer questions and to review documents throughout your inMotion matter. Training videos are available for individuals who are unable to attend one of our scheduled training sessions. CLE credit is available for viewing our training videos.
Major law firm attorneys not yet admitted to the New York bar can work on a matter under the supervision of an admitted corporate law firm attorney pursuant to inMotion’s Student Practice Order. Contact inMotion for more information at CLEtrainings@inmotiononline.org.
Your commitment
Trainings are offered to major law firm attorneys who are willing to take an inMotion pro bono matter following the completion of the training course.
This training is open to attorneys who are currently working on inMotion cases without the obligation to take on a new matter. It is also open to attorneys who are willing to take on a new pro bono case. InMotion attorneys are available to mentor volunteers on their cases.
Pre-registration is required for all trainings.
