April 3/Web: The U Visa for Immigrant Crime Victims #MCLE

Passed as part of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000, the U Visa was designed by Congress to encourage immigrant victims of domestic violence and other violent crime to step out of the shadows and report criminal activity without fear about being undocumented.  One of the principal requirements of the U Visa is a certification signed by law enforcement that attests to the victim’s cooperation in the investigation or prosecution of the criminal activity.
In this webinar, Selena Britzius-Negash, an attorney from the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, will provide an overview of the legal framework governing the U Visa, including the specific role that the law provides for criminal justice professionals.  In addition, Assistant Mower County Attorney Jeremy Clinefelter, will discuss that office’s approach to the U Visa and will provide examples of cases where they signed an immigrant victim’s U Visa certification.   Preregistration Required.
