Mar 26/Cleveland: Working Hard, Hardly Working: How Misinterpretations of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act Have Undermined its Effectiveness

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) has generally been hailed as a success story that has brought pregnant workers from an era of exclusion to an era of inclusion.  However, the law has utterly failed to help women who are partially, but not fully disabled by pregnancy gain the accommodations necessary to allow them to continue to work.
This lecture will explore the misunderstandings and misperceptions that have hampered the ability of the PDA to make room for pregnant women's full participation in the workplace.

Deborah L. Brake is Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Her scholarship focuses on various dimensions of equality law. She is a nationally recognized expert and author on Title IX and gender equality in sports, and on gender discrimination more broadly.   Her articles have appeared in journals such as the Minnesota Law Review, William and Mary Law Review, North Carolina Law Review, and the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender.
